By Our Staff Reporter
SIVAGANGA, MAY 7. The Sivaganga Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, has ordered closure of all liquor shops in the district from May 8 to 14 to avoid disturbances for Parliamentary elections. Along with the poll observer for the Sivaganga constituency, Ramphamal Meena, A. K. Singh, the Collector reviewed arrangements for free and fair polls. Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Radhakrishnan said the closure of liquor shops was necessary, as the district witnessed poll-related violence in the past. The list of criminals and anti-social elements had been drawn up to monitor their movements and activities. The Collector said that to transport electronic voting machines to 1091 polling booths in various places, 78 zonal parties and mobile parties had been formed and instructions given to mobile parties while taking the EVMs. Meanwhile, the Ramanathapuram Collector, S. The observers of the Ramanathapuram constituency, Sanjeev Kumar, and Jaikishore Mishra, the Ramanathapuram range Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar Das, participated in the meeting. Addressing the meeting, the Collector ordered all assistant returning officers and presiding officers to report for duty well in advance on the evening of May 9. . The zonal officers should go round all polling stations allotted to them, at least thrice on the polling day and the zonal officer should ensure that no banners, posters, writings or symbols of political parties were seen within 100 meters of the polling stations. Mr. Vijayakumar instructed the presiding officers to accept the 16 documents to identify the voters and not to accept the certificate or identity of the voters by Village Administrative Officers or village assistance, as directed by the Election Commission.
