HYDERABAD, MAY 7. A high capacity Doppler radar meant for cyclone warning will be installed in the port town of Machilipatnam soon. With the installation of the radar, Andhra Pradesh will be better equipped to track down cyclones by the onset of monsoon, according to an official from the State Met Office here. This facility will help the State whose 960 km-long coastline is frequently ravaged by cyclones. Visakhapatnam will be next in the State to get the radar, having been identified by the India Meteorological Department under a programme. The Commissioner for Disaster Management, Asutosh Mishra, on Friday said the Doppler radar would be able to accurately indicate the velocity, pressure and direction of wind within the core of the cyclone, regardless of the distance between the storm and the mainland.
