Charges against Kanta denied

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, MAY 8. Prakash Benakanalli, Subash Benakanalli and Santosh Talwar, Janata Dal (Secular) leaders, today charged the Vice-President of the party, Vittal Heroor, party candidate in the Gulbarga Lok Sabha Constituency, with indulging in anti-party activities and levelling baseless allegations against the senior party leader, S.K. Kanta. Mr. Prakash Benakanalli is a former Opposition leader in the city corporation.

In a statement issued here, they said Mr. Heroor had sullied the image of the party by issuing a statement in the press demanding disciplinary action against Mr. Kanta. There was no truth in the allegation that Mr Kanta had worked against the interests of the party in the elections and indirectly supported the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

They said Mr. Kanta had made it clear three months ago that he had no intention to contest in the elections this time and the claim of Mr. Heroor that Mr. Kanta, who failed to get the party ticket to contest in the Lok Sabha elections, had worked against the party candidate had no basis. They charged Mr. Heroor with working against the party's official candidate in the Afsalpur Assembly Constituency, M.Y. Patil, and associating himself with the BJP leadership. They urged the Janata Dal (S) leadership to expel Mr. Heroor from the party and save its image.
