`Paes-Bhupathi duo does have a chance'

BANGALORE, MAY 8. Krishna Bhupathi, father of Mahesh, said the Indian tennis pair Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi has a chance of winning a medal at the Olympics, provided they get into the top four seedings.

In a chat with The Hindu here, Bhupathi (Sr), reacting to the Indian legend, Ramanathan Krishnan's doubts about the Indian pair, said: "First of all I wish to thank Mr. Krishnan for taking the pressure off the pair, because everybody had gone to town, with a heavy build about the chances of glory. So any, critical assessment, that too coming from someone like Krishnan is most welcome than loads of accolades."

Mr. Bhupathi said though the Indian pair hasn't been playing together for quite some time now, except the Davis Cup ties, it is still in with a chance." I only hope that they find themselves in the top four seedings. I would be happy if the AITA represents to organising committee, citing their great Davis Cup record, if it helps them to get a seeding", said Mr. Bhupathi.

He was confident about Mahesh's form and performance. "Records are there to speak for his show and he has done well with Max (Mirnyi) and I hope in the run-up to Olympics, Leander Paes too improves his doubles record. He is a fighter and I am sure, he can", said Mr. Bhupathi.

Even, if they are not seeded, it would not be proper to dismiss the Indian pair, felt Mr. Bhupathi. "They would still be the dark horse pair. When they are together, they give more than 100 per cent and once they get going with a couple of wins in the preliminary rounds, it will be hard to stop the ` Indian Express', said the Mr. Bhupathi. — Our Special Correspondent
