Red Cross Society

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 8. The relevance of the Red Cross movement was more now than at any time in the past since violation of human rights has been increasing by the day, according to G.Karthikeyan, the Minister for Cultural Affairs. Inaugurating the observance of the World Red Cross Day under the auspices of the Kerala chapter of the Indian Red Cross Society here today, he hailed the services being provided to the needy by the Society, be it in any part of the world.

Archbishop's call

Archbishop Joseph Powathil, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanacherry and the president of the Inter Church Council for Education, has called for exercising the franchise keeping in mind the common good of the country. In a pressnote issued today he said that support should be given to those who were striving to provide security and stability to the people particularly the poor, the suffering and the minorities.

Action sought

The Thiruvananthapuram district committee of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association has condemned the incident at Vellayambalam in the city on Friday, in which the cashier of a restaurant was attacked by a gang of miscreants. Expressing concern over the increasing incidence of violence and organised attacks by criminal gangs in the capital city, the Association asked the Government to check them.
