Some relief camps to be shifted

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, MAY 8. Even as the preparations for the polls on Monday are in the final stages, a few polling stations in the coastal belt of the district have become relief shelters for the people affected by the continuing rain and sea erosion.

Steps are being taken to shift the people from five institutions already demarcated as polling booths to some other suitable place, according to officials.

This has become a tricky situation for the officials since the polling booths have to be handed over to the polling officers on the previous day of the voting itself as per the election rules.

Since shifting the polling booths, which had been fixed earlier, is impossible without the consent of the Election Commission, the district administration has to find some alternative arrangements for the relief shelters.

The District Collector, Gyanesh Kumar, told The Hindu that steps for finding alternative relief centres would be completed as soon as possible.

He said he had visited all the relief centres at Vypeen and ensured the people of equal or better amenities at the new centres.
