Elaborate security for counting of votes

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 8. The entire city police, three companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF), besides platoons drawn from the Armed Reserve, will be deployed at all the 12 centres for counting of votes to be held on May 11 and May 13. Police have said section 144 Cr PC will be imposed in the twin cities from 6 a.m. on May 11 to 6 a.m. on May 14.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the city Police Commissioner, R.P. Singh, said that either an Additional Commissioner of Police or a Joint Commissioner would be kept in charge in each of the five zones. He said barricading would be done to prevent entry of unauthorised persons at the centres and videography arrangements were also being made to record any untoward incidents.

Metal detectors were also being installed at the entry points of counting centres and sniffer dogs would also be pressed into service. "Sufficient number of plainclothes personnel are being deployed inside the counting centres to keep a watch on the agents of various political parties and mischief mongers," he said.

He informed that all toddy and wine shops, bars attached to restaurants, star hotels and military canteen situated in the limits of twin cities, would be closed from 6 a.m. on May 11 to 6 a.m. on May 12 and again from 6 a.m. on May 13 to 6 a.m. on May 14. Processions, rallies, bursting of firecrackers, carrying of sticks and firearms was also prohibited, he added.

The Commissioner said that pickets were being posted at all sensitive places and patrol teams would be on constant move. Rowdy-sheeters who were involved in incidents of arson or rioting during the last two years and those involved in election-related offences on polling day would be taken into preventive custody. "There is no information, so far, about the possibility of trouble breaking out anywhere in the twin cities," Mr. Singh added.
