KOZHIKODE, MAY 9. The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has strongly condemned the shameful incidents of torture, humiliation and human rights violation at the Abu Gharaib prison in Iraq. In a press release here today, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind secretary general, Mohammed Jafar, expressed his deep anguish over the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners. The Americans were also indulging in human rights abuse at Guantanamo, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind leader added. Effective action should be taken by the United Nations against this inhuman behaviour. The world community should use their collective will to put an end to U.S. tyranny and oppression in Iraq, he said. The conduct of U.S. forces revealed the hollowness of American claims of being the champions of liberty and human rights. These highly sadistic, cruel and inhuman incidents of abuse had shaken the conscience of civil society. Mr. Jafar said proper action under the Geneva Convention should be initiated against these war crimes and an international tribunal should be set up to punish the guilty.
