Shocking

Sir, — The Army's admission that some its officers fabricated enemy kills on Siachen to exaggerate their success is shocking. This is one of the manifestations of the mad race for decorations and promotions in our armed forces.

Krishna Kumari,

Coimbatore

Sir, — At a time when the Army is held in the highest esteem by all Indians, the faked killings are a disgrace. No one can forget the heroism and valour shown by our Army personnel in the wars of 1965, 1971 and Kargil in 1999. The unflinching contribution of the Army in times of emergency and during internal strife is invaluable.

The need of the hour is to set matters right in the world's most respected and disciplined organisation.

Safiuddin Khan,

Aligarh, U.P.

Sir, — The scandalous revelations are a grim indication that malpractices, rampant in the other fields, have also spread to the armed forces. The silver lining is that the issue has not been swept under the carpet. The Army Headquarters promptly announcing action against the two mid-ranking officers shows there is still considerable transparency and accountability in the armed forces of India.

Nalini Vijayaraghavan,

Thiruvananthapuram
