Letters to the Editor
Sir, The ill-treatment of Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghraib by American forces is deplorable. The credibility of the superpower that portrays itself as the guardian angel of the underdeveloped nations has been diminished. The stars on the uniform of the guilty should not be a deterrent in meting out justice. George Mathew Philip, Kochi * * * Sir, On the one hand, the U.S. talks of war against terror and champions human rights, and, on the other, it has indulged in such an obscene display of power and barbarism. Such torture and exploitation will sow the seeds of many more terror attacks all over the world. Alok Dubey, New Delhi
* * * Sir, The treatment meted out to the Iraqi prisoners of war, though disgusting, is not unexpected. All occupying armies are equally barbaric. D.S. Jeyakumar, Kalakad, T.N. * * * Sir, It was stated in the editorial, "Horrors of the occupation" (May 5) that the military police added insult to injury by taking the photographs of the American soldiers inflicting torture and sexual abuse on the Iraqi prisoners. In fact, they have done a service to the entire world. But for them, these gory incidents would not have come to light and the true face of occupation would have remained hidden. The entire world is indebted to them. S. Vidyadhar, Hyderabad
