HYDERABAD, MAY 9. G. Shyam Sunder, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences, said that medical education had witnessed a substantial growth in the State during his tenure. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Dr. Shyam Sunder sought to brush aside controversies regarding recognition of new seats by the Medical Council of India and other issues by highlighting the addition of new colleges, both in modern medicine and in alternative and allied fields. At present, there are 161 colleges affiliated to the university. Of these, 27 are colleges of modern medicine and 16 dental colleges. These apart, there are four medical colleges each for Ayurveda and Homeopathy and two for Unani. There are 51 colleges of nursing, 28 of physiotherapy and 27 of medical laboratory technology, apart from one each of naturopathy, yoga and applied nutrition. Dr. Shyam Sunder said that apart from the increase in medical colleges, new courses and new post-graduate specialities had been introduced in subjects like endocrinology, surgical gastroenterology, surgical oncology and family medicine. The university had also started the process of inducting non-medical faculty for teaching the non-clinical courses. Exams, too, had been reformed with the introduction of bar codes and OMR sheets, he said. The press conference was scheduled to be addressed by the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the university, R. Sambasiva Rao, who is currently Director-General of Health Services, Government of India. Dr. Shyam Sunder said that Dr. Rao was yet to be relieved from his current post and would be joining his new position shortly.
