1 killed, 25 injured in Doda grenade blast

DODA, MAY 9. One person was killed and 25 others were injured, six of them seriously, when a grenade went off in Doda town of Jammu province this morning, barely 24 hours before the last phase of polling begins. This is the fourth major attack in Doda district, which is part of the Udhampur parliamentary constituency, since electioneering began.

According to witnesses, the grenade exploded near the Doda Government Hospital, which is a few meters away from the residence of the Doda Superintendent of Police, Sunil Kumar. Abdul Majid Bhat, the District Information officer, who was injured in the attack, later died in hospital.

Six seriously injured persons have been airlifted to the Government Medical College, Jammu.

Reports said the attack occurred minutes after the National Conference candidate, Khalid Najib Suhrawardy, passed through the area.
