SIVAGANGA, MAY 9. The Sivaganga district administration has made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of elections in the Sivaganga constituency, where P. Chidambaram of the Congress is contesting against S. Karupaiah of the AIADMK. All polling materials, including the electronic voting machines, have been sent to 1091 booths in the constituency. Over 4500 polling personnel were engaged in poll-related work. The Returning Officer, J. Radhakrishnan, reviewed arrangements along with the Central Observers to ensure free and fair elections. Apart from Mr. Chidambaram and Mr. Karupaiah, 10 candidates are in fray for the constituency. The Collector has formed a special cell besides a control room for lodging complaints in the district. He appealed to the public to inform or complaint any poll violation. They can also forward complain to the Election Observers in the following numbers; 04575-241525, 04575-240393, 04575-240394. He ordered election officials to strictly follow the rules of the Election Commission in identifying the voter's identity. The administration has asked all General Hospitals and the Primary Health Centres to remain alert to face any eventuality. Meanwhile, the Returning officer of the Ramanathapuram constituency, S. Vijaykumar, has completed all arrangements to start the election. The necessary polling materials have already reached to 1146 booths. It includes 1146 control units of electronic voting machines and 2292 ballot units of electronic voting machines. The Collector asked the presiding officers to verify the functioning of the EVMs before voting starts. He warned that anybody who tried to impersonate would be arrested immediately to prevent unwanted incident. He said polling would start 7 a.m. and continue up to 5 p.m. without any break. The Ramanathapuram constituency is witnessing a direct contest between S. Murugesan of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Bhavani Rajendran of the Dravaida Munnetra Kazhagam. Kannappan of the People's Alliance is also in fray.
