TIRUNELVELI, MAY 9. The district administration, in an attempt to receive the poll-related information and complaint from the public and members of parties, has set up a control room in the Collectorate. According to the Collector and Returning Officer of the Tenkasi reserved constituency, Sunil Paliwal, the control room would be manned by a team of officials headed by the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, P. Ponniah. The control room officials could be contacted at 0462 - 2500224 or 98421 - 65955 to register the poll-related complaints, which would be immediately routed to the Central Election Observers and the Returning Officer concerned for appropriate action. In the Palayamkottai taluk office, the District Revenue Officer and Returning Officer of Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency, R. Thambidurai, and the tahsildar, Ponnusamy, inspected all the documents required for tomorrow's polling.
All `sensitive' and `hypersensitive' stations of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur segments have been provided with additional security personnel to face any eventuality.
The official machinery has made all arrangements for the polling in Sivakasi constituency. Electronic voting machines and other poll paraphernalia have been moved to 1261 stations.
The Collector and Sivakasi constituency Returning Officer, A. Mohammed Aslam, today conducted random inspection of the poll arrangements in several parts of the constituencies.
Official sources said that all officials in poll duty have reported for duty. Six Assistant Returning Officers and similar number of additional Returning Officers supervised the arrangements.
Spare EVMs were also kept ready to meet any eventualities. The officials also ensured that there was no poll graffiti present within 100 metres around the booths and all party booths were set up only beyond 200 metres from the polling booth.
Fourteen candidates, including `Sippiparai' A. Ravichandran (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), P. Kannan (All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), Deepa Valentina (Janata Dal - United), S. Jeyaseelan (Bahujan Samaj Party) and 10 independents were in fray.
The Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police, N. Arivuselvam, said that mobile parties were kept ready to keep the response time between 10 and 15 minutes. Elaborate arrangements have been made at the two counting centres in Virudhunagar - S. Vellaichamy Nadar Polytechnic and V.H.N.S.N. College.
The district police have arrested 14 persons for precautionary measures.
The total number of voters in the constituency was 1313594 Male - 628260 and female 675334.
Residents threaten
poll boycott
Meanwhile, in Virudhunagar, a section of residents threatened to boycott poll, if drinking water was supplied to them before 7 a.m. tomorrow. Confronted by an unexpected demand from the people, cadres of a party arranged for free distribution of water through tankers in ward five and 10.
