Farewell accorded to Air Force

Training Command Chief

Hyderabad: B. K. Pandey, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command, was presented a guard of honour and given a ceremonial send off at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, on Saturday when he arrived on his farewell visit. Air Marshal Pandey will be retiring on May 31 after 40 years of service in the Indian Air Force. His wife, Pramila Pandey, who is the regional president of the Air Force Wives Welfare Association, accompanied him. He was given a traditional farewell party in the officers' mess and briefed about the training activities and new infrastructure of the academy. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Air Marshal Pandey joined the IAF as a Flying Pilot in 1964 and held a number of important staff and command appointments during his career.

Special election programmes on DD

Hyderabad: Doordarshan (DD) will telecast special election programmes on May 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to give live coverage of the counting of votes for the Assembly election in Andhra Pradesh. The special programmes will be telecast in Telugu on DD-8 (Sapthagiri) and in English and Hindi on DD-News (National Channel). On DD-8 there will be hourly 15-minute news broadcast starting at 8 a.m. Special Urdu bulletins will be telecast at 12.15 p.m., 1.15 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. The programmes will include counting trends, results, discussions and analysis of results and their implications. They will also include live reporting from the TDP and Congress offices as well as reactions of leaders of all the important political parties, apart from journalists, experts and social activists.

`Suicide' by prisoner in Tuni sub-jail

Rajahmundry: A remand prisoner in the Tuni sub-jail, Yellamanchili Appa Rao (45), reportedly committed `suicide' in the prison in the early hours of Sunday. A native of Dondapaka village in Tuni mandal, Appa Rao was accused in the murder his wife, Nookaratnam, in March last.

Two women die in water tank collapse

NIZAMABAD: Two women died and five others sustained injuries when a mini-water tank constructed by the Rural Water Supply wing of the Panchayat Raj Department a month ago, collapsed in Chandrayanpalli village under the Dichpalli police station limits, about 40 km from here, on Sunday. The tank collapsed when the women were filling water crushing them resulting in the instantaneous death of Venkavva, (70). Six others identified as -- Ameena Bee, Shyamala, Rajitha, Bhoodevi, Chitti and Basheer -- were rescued and rushed to the district headquarters hospital here. Ameena Bee was declared brought dead by the doctors at the hospital. The District Collector, D.V.Raidu, rushed to the village and announced instant relief of Rs. 2,000 to each of the injured. He promised to provide assistance to the family members of the two victims. He also issued orders placing the Panchayat secretary of Chandrayanpalli under suspension.

Man dies after consuming liquor

VIJAYAWADA: A 60-year old man died after he reportedly consumed cheap liquor in the One Town area of the city on Sunday evening. The victim, Syed Kamaluddin, who works with a flower vendor, reportedly consumed liquor at a local bar at around 3 p.m. However, within a few minutes he collapsed at the place. The bar staff shifted him to the Government General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Two Town police have registered a case. The body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem.

Ex-assistant Professor dismissed

HYDERABAD: A former Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology of Kurnool Medical College, E. Vasantha Murthy, who was caught by the sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) allegedly after accepting Rs. 400 bribe for conducting an eye operation four years ago, was dismissed from service following his conviction. The Additional Special Judge for ACB Cases, Hyderabad, sentenced Dr. Murthy to undergo two years rigorous imprisonment and pay Rs. 1,000 fine, as the latter was found guilty of taking bribe.

Unlicensed firearms destroyed

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah district police machinery has destroyed 599 unlicensed firearms seized in various parts of the district since 1997, in the District Police Office here, after a formal inspection by the Kurnool Range DIG, Satya Narayan, on Sunday. The DIG inspected 599 firearms, which included double-barrel and single barrel guns and .305 tapanchas. The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, said the firearms were seized from factionalists and troublemakers in the district. The illicit firearms were piled up in a heap and crushed under a road-roller.

Seized boats released by Orissa

VISAKHAPATNAM: Seven of the 11 mechanised fishing boats, belonging to fishermen from Andhra coast, which were seized by the Orissa Government, have been released after four months. The boats were seized by the Coast Guard and handed over to the Orissa Government in January last for allegedly violating the regulations at sea for protecting Olive Ridley turtles. The joint secretary of Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators Welfare Association, S. Satyanarayana, said the seven boats with their crew returned to the fishing harbour here and that the case relating to four other vessels was still pending in the court in Orissa.

Isolated rain forecast

Hyderabad: The severe cyclonic storm remained in the Arabian Sea for the fourth day on Sunday without any change in its intensity. It moved in a northwest direction and lay about 350 km off Goa and was likely to move further in that direction and peter out. The storm will have no impact on the State. Rain in the State subsided and day temperatures rose marginally. Mainly dry weather prevailed in Coastal Andhra and it was dry in Telangana and Rayalaseema. The maximum temperatures rose at a few places in Rayalaseema and they changed little in Coastal Andhra and Telangana. Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Ramagundam recorded the highest day temperature for the 24-hour period ending Sunday morning at 39 degree C. There will be isolated rain/thundershowers in all three regions of the State on Monday, according to a forecast issued by the State Met Office.

Police officers' building opened

KURNOOL: The Superintendent of Police, V.R.K. Mohan Rao, inaugurated the police officers' association building here on Sunday.

Also, he opened the extended portion of dormitory at the police campus. The SP gave away a cheque for Rs. One lakh to the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector, Somanna, who died while in service some time ago.

The amount was contributed by all police personnel. The Additional SP, G. Srinivasa Reddy and others were present.

Counting centres inspected

KURNOOL: The district Collector, Ajay Jain, inspected the counting centres at G.P.R. Engineering college here on Sunday.

Also, the Collector examined the cells created for observers, district electoral officer and the media. The Collector was accompanied by the DRO, Laxmikantham, the Deputy SP, Chalapathi Rao and others. The RDO, Suryaprakash was also present.

ICET model exam

TIRUPATI: The Commissionerate of employment and training, Hyderabad, will be conducting a model examination on May 16, on the lines of SV University's ICET-2004, for admission into MBA and MCA courses.

Insurance staff appeal

CUDDAPAH: The Insurance Corporation Employees Union leaders on Sunday submitted a memorandum to the former MP and Congress candidate of Rajampet Parliamentary constituency, A. Sai Prathap, seeking his cooperation to their struggle to safeguard the LIC from the threat of privatisation.
