7 policemen suspended
KARUR MAY 9. The Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Mittal, has placed under suspension seven police personnel who escorted an undertrial when he gave the slip to them. A special team has been formed to nab the escapee. Those suspended were head constables Ponnan, Azhagumalai, Rajamanikkam, Ilangovan and Duraikannu and constables Manoharan and Thangavelu. They were escorting a group of undertrials to the Kulithalai court when V. Meghanathan, charged with committing a double murder at Surianoor, near Kulithalai, last year, took to his heels after getting himself released from the shackles.
4 held for financial irregularities
DINDIGUL MAY 9. Bakiaraj, a mason of Kannivadi, his wife Rani and Thalayathu Mary and Fathima Mary of Kodaikanal were today arrested on charges of committing financial irregularities. The police said the four collected Rs. 60 each from many people aged above 50 promising that they would get them Rs. 200 and five kg of rice every month from foreign countries. They collected thousands of rupees from those residing at Kuyavanaickenpatti, Pudhupatti, Maniyakaranpatti and Thirumalpatti in Kannivadi.
Elephant dies in forest
ERODE MAY 9. A female elephant died in Sathyamangalam forest yesterday. According to forest personnel, the elephant, which was going along with two calves, fell unconscious near Puliamkombai. The calves left the place. Tribals, who noticed the elephant, alerted the forest personnel. Doctors rushed to Puliamkombai and administered 50 bottles of glucose and injected medicines. The elephant died last night.
Two boys drowned
CUDDALORE May 9. Sekar (11) and Thirumali (8) of the Salakkarai Manaveli area here today drowned when they went to take a swim in the Gadilam, near Tiruvaheendrapuram. When the boys got into the river, which had received fresh water following the recent rain, they were caught in a whirlpool. Neighbours retrieved the bodies. The bodies were taken to the Government hospital here for post-mortem.
Special buses to Veerapandi
DINDIGUL MAY 9. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai-Division IV) Limited will operate special buses from May 11 to 18 in connection with the Gowmariamman temple festival at Veerapandi. Buses will be operated to Veerapandi from Madurai, Dindigul, Periakulam, Theni, Bodi, Cumbum, Gudalur, Andipatti, Usilampatti, Chinnamanur, Thevaram and Uthamapalayam. Special officers will be posted at all central bus stands to guide pilgrims. Wireless communication system will be provided at these places for smooth operation of the buses, says a release.
Illicit arrack seized
KRISHNAGIRI MAY 9. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel today seized 3,080 litres of illicit arrack and 480 bottles of spurious liquor from a lorry at Perandapalli here. The police said a team, during vehicular checks, intercepted a lorry coming from Karnataka on the Hosur-Krishnagiri Road and found liquor bottles. The driver, Ali (40), was arrested and the vehicle seized.
`Endoscopy best to treat sinus'
CHENNAI MAY 9. Endoscopy is the `best course' of treatment for sinus as the surgery is done with minimal invasion. It involves least hospitalisation and does not cost too much, Prahalada, a sinus specialist from Bangalore, has said. Dr. Prahalada demonstrated the technique to sinus specialists at the Siva ENT hospital here yesterday. The meeting and demonstration was organised by the Indian Medical Association's Chennai Marina Branch and the Madras-India chapter of Acoustical Society of America.
Book on Sonia released
CHENNAI MAY 9. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, today released a book on the party president, Sonia Gandhi, here. He appreciated the author of the book and chairman, Intellectuals' department of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, A. Chakrapani, for the publication. The book, `Sonia Gandhi-Bharata Ashajyoti', highlighted Ms. Gandhi's service to the people and her political achievements as Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr. Chakrapani said.
Award for Southern Railway
CHENNAI May 9. The Railway Board has announced a cash award of Rs. 2 lakhs to Southern Railway for its best performance in the year of customer satisfaction and Rs. 20,000 to the Chennai Central station for providing amenities to passengers. The Chairman, R.K. Singh, and members of the Board, during their visit to Chennai recently, reviewed the performance of Southern Railway and were satisfied with steps taken by the zone on safety, security, punctuality and cleanliness to provide greater satisfaction to passengers. Technology-driven passenger information systems and expansion of computerised passenger reservation network were all part of the host of initiatives taken by the zone during the year. As a token of appreciation, the Board announced the award, according to Southern Railway General Manager, V. Anand. The Chairman also directed the zone to strengthen the metre gauge lines where conversion would take time, Mr. Anand said.
Engineer dies
Tuticorin May 9. The Chief Electrical Engineer of a dredging ship died in mid-sea on Saturday due to illness. According to the police, Rakhnyansky Valery (42), a Russian, reportedly complained of uneasiness when the ship, M.V. Professor Gorginov, was sailing from Singapore to Cyprus. As the vessel was nearing the Tuticorin Port, it was diverted to the port to get medical assistance to Valery. However, he died. The post-mortem was done at the Tuticorin Government Medical College Hospital today and the body is expected to be handed over to the agents of the ship, who have arrived here from Mumbai, to be flown to Russia.
Two bar attendants held
Tirunelveli May 9. The Thatchanallur police today seized 269 Indian-Made Foreign Liquor bottles and arrested two bar attendants for allegedly selling them. The police said a patrol party intercepted Kannan (22), of Vickramasingapuram, and S. Murugesan (29), of Teachers' Colony at Pettai near here, at Mangalakudiyiruppu under the Thatchanallur police station limits and seized the bottles, worth Rs.20,000 from them. Since the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, has ordered the closure of IMFL retail outlets in the district in view of the polling, the police are looking for illegal sale of liquor.
House burgled
Nagercoil May 9. The police are on the look out for an unidentified gang, which looted the house of Nainar of Elankadai near here and decamped with gold jewels and house-hold articles worth Rs50,000 on Friday night. According to sources, Nainar is working abroad. His wife, Leelawathy, has been to her parent's house at Punkadi Vinayagar Nagar. The gang gained entry into her house from the back yard.
Raid on marriage halls
Nagercoil May 9. The Election Observers for the Nagercoil constituency, Manikadatta (expenditure), Bijendra Kumar and Anuracsrivatsava (general) along with the police conducted raids on all marriage halls in different parts of the district to check if there was any outsider to cast bogus votes. They directed the police to take stern action against trouble mongers on the polling day. Meanwhile, a media centre had been opened at the Information and Public Relation Office for the benefit of presspersons. The phone number is 279262.
Water level
MADURAI MAY 9. The level in the Periyar dam stood at 110.80 feet with an inflow of 446 cusecs and a discharge of 250 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 21.72 feet with an inflow of 17 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The rainfall registered at various places (in mm) in the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. today was: Periyar dam - 8, Tekkadi - 7 and the Shanmuganadi - 2.
