Sea erosion in Alappuzha abates

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, MAY 9. The intensity of sea erosion in the coastal areas of the district subsided today. The torrential rain that lashed the district for the last three days also stopped. But the sea erosion and torrential rain have wrecked havoc in the coastal area.

As many as 325 families in the coastal area who lost their houses in the sea erosion are living in the four camps opened by the district administration in various parts of the district.

The District Collector, K. M. Ramanandan, said a control-room has been opened at the district collectorate to coordinate relief activities. Public could contact the control room over the telephone number 2251675, he said.

Mr. Ramanandan said the district administration had taken steps to pile up sand bags along the seacoast at Ambalappuzha, Neerkunnam and Pallithode areas in the district to check sea erosion. He said the areas facing the threat of sea erosion were under observation.
