Tagore birth anniversary fete

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 9 . The 143rd birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated here under the joint auspices of the State Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD) and the Bengali Association. Ayyappa Panicker, poet, who inaugurated the celebrations, said that the poem written by Mahakavi Kumaranasan on the occasion of the visit of Tagore to Kerala in 1923 was an example of the deep links between Keralites and Bengalis. Dr. Panicker recalled that some of his own works had been translated into Bengali.

Directive to voters

Voter identity cards have been made compulsory for polling this time. If any voter cannot produce it due to a genuine reason, the matter should be presented before the concerned polling official. Such voters also have to sign a declaration before the polling official and present some other acceptable document establishing identity. No persons, except the security personnel, will be allowed to carry mobile phones, wireless sets or cordless phones within a radius of 100 metres of a polling booth, the State Electoral Officer said.

Asianet's optic fibre backbone

Asianet Satellite Communications has commissioned Kerala's first optic fibre backbone, the company said in a press release issued here today. It will provide high bandwidth connectivity to all parts of the State. This underground optic fibre backbone will connect 45 centres of Asianet Cable Services across the State and ensure digital quality picture and sound to all its subscribers. At present, Asianet is offering over 80 digital channels and the company proposes to give the subscribers over 250 channels in the near future. Live coverage of events, video-voice-data convergence and interactive television facilities too would be extended to the subscribers, the press release added.

Course in quality management

The Centre for Management Development (CMD), an autonomous institution of the State Government, will offer a five-day course in `Quality management system' for the lead auditors of companies here from May 24. In a press release, the CMD said some seats were vacant for the course. The course would equip participants in putting in place the appropriate system in their companies for winning ISO 9001:2000 certification. The course is being organised in association with the National Quality Assurance, United Kingdom. More details can be had from K.T. 17 injured in house collapse

PATHANAMTHITTA May 9 . As many as 17 women were injured when a house caved-in in rain at Niranam, near Thiruvalla, on Saturday. According to the police, the incident occurred when the women had gathered to offer prayers prior to the funeral of a 50-year old woman relative, Ponnamma of Kochupurackal Maliyil at Niramam, at 11 a.m.

Haj: regional office planned

KOTTAYAM May 9. The Kerala Haj Service Society would open a regional office at Changanasserry to service the pilgrims from Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. All free services, including Haj classes, being extended to the pilgrims from the main office would be available here. K. A. Muhammed Sharief will be the president of the centre and Shaiju K. Hassan, secretary. The office would begin functioning from June and distribution of application forms would start from the first week of June.

Workshop on personality development

KOZHIKODE MAY 9. The Patanjali Yoga Research Centre will conduct a workshop on personality development for children at the Zamorin's High School on May 16. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Apart from sessions on personality development classes will also be held on yoga by experts. Award for railway official

N. Aravindakshan, Chief Commercial Inspector, Kozhikode, has been awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Southern Railway for his outstanding performance and dedication to duty during 2003-2004.

Office-bearers elected

Sivaprasad K. Nair and Swapna George were elected president and general secretary respectively of the Gandhian Study Forum attached to the Gandhi Peace Foundation Trust, at a meeting held here today. The other office-bearers were K.C. Anupama (vice-president), C.K. Manoj (joint secretary) and K.P. Praveen (treasurer). A 21-member committee was also formed at the meeting.

Scholarship for 10

A total of 10 persons have been selected for studying in various polytechnic institutions in Singapore with scholarships from the Government there, according to a release by the Mythri Skill Development Centre. They are Rani Lakshmi Raghuraj, Devika Menon, T. Shabeer, Binu K.Jose, Abu Tariq S, Salim M.A, Ratheesh Gopi, Binil Prakash, Divek Mohan K and Ashirvad K. Family meet

The students of the Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology will organise a family get together at the Seminar Complex at Thenhipalam on May 16. The Vice-Chancellor, Syed Iqbal Hasnain, will inaugurate the function and the college principal, A.M.K. Poduval, will deliver the keynote address, according to a release here today.
