NEW DELHI, MAY 9. Several eminent candidates, including two Union Ministers, Sahib Singh Verma, and Vijay Goel, have been issued notices by the Returning Officers of their respective constituencies for defacement of public properties and violating the model code of conduct. While Mr. Verma is seeking re-election from Outer Delhi, Mr. Goel, is the party nominee from Delhi Sadar. Among the two prominent Congress candidates, who have been served with show-cause notices, include the Delhi Assembly Speaker, Ajay Maken, contesting from New Delhi, and his senior partymen, and the former Union Transport Minister, Jagdish Tytler, from Delhi Sadar. The Congress nominee for Moti Nagar Assembly by-election, Ram Maggo, too has been served notice by his Returning Officer for violating the model code and defacing public places. However, officials clarified that these were only notices and no action has been initiated so far against them. "Law would take its own course," they said, adding that notices were being issued based on the regular videography being done by the Returning Officers in their respective areas. Several other candidates have been issued notices, sources said. Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Officer for Delhi, Arun Goyal, said a complaint has been lodged with the police by the South Delhi Returning Officer, against the BJP spokesman, V.K. Malhotra, for allegedly distributing wall clocks to voters of his area two days ago. "Though no first information report has been registered so far, we have ordered for an inquiry in this regard," he said. In another development, Mr. Goyal said the Delhi Government has stopped distribution of school bags in government schools following a direction by the Election Commission. "A compliance report has already been sent to the Commission," he said.
