CHENNAI, MAY 9. Over the next decade, India will emerge as a major manpower supplier to the West, which means the country has to prepare its youth with skill, abilities and values, the Madras University Vice Chancellor, S.P. Thyagarajan, said on Friday. Dr. Thyagarajan said in the next 10 years, India and China would have 70 per cent of their population below 30 years of age whereas most countries in the West will have 70 per cent of their population above 60 years of age. "But only manpower is not enough. The youth will have to be trained, empowered and strengthened by inculcating human values in them," he said, delivering a lecture on the theme, `Stop Discrimination', as a function organised at Indian Red Cross Society, to mark World Red Cross Day. Values alone can bring about a change in the people so as to eliminate discrimination against other human beings. While discrimination against victims of wars and natural disasters, victims of communal violence and religious discriminations are rampant, there is prejudice against patients suffering from diseases such as leprosy, sexually transmitted diseases and those living with HIV/AIDS, he said. S.V. Chittibabu, Vice-President, Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch, said the International Red Cross Society has put human dignity as the first tenet that should appeal to the morality of all individuals and groups. T.K. Shanmugasundaram, Chairman, IRCS, said one of the most common forms of discrimination was practised in the medical profession - that of discriminating against patients suffering from leprosy or people living with HIV/AIDS. M. Bargavi Devendra, Honorary Secretary, IRCS, spoke. Prof. Thyagarajan later distributed trophies and prizes to various business establishments, educational institutions and voluntary organisations for blood donation, besides mobility aids to disabled persons.
