Model election?

Sir, — The election process this time was inordinately long, stretching over three months.

The Government work is at a standstill.

Even commercial activities have been affected. This is an age of speed with sophisticated gadgets and information technology facilities.

The Election Commission should have used them to make the process less time-consuming.

Names of lakhs of voters were missing in the electoral rolls.

There is a wait for three weeks after polling for the election results. Can we call this a model election?

Exam centres

Sir, — Why cannot the students be allowed to take the Common Entrance Test for admission to professional institutes in their respective colleges?

The Pre-University Board conducts examinations this way.

The students will not have time to copy in the CET as only a limited time is available for answering the questions.

Moreover, the students themselves will not allow others to copy from their answer scripts as it would affect their ranking.

Hence there is no harm in allowing them to take the test in their respective colleges.

Garbage disposal

Sir, — Disposal of garbage in Bangalore appears to be easily scoring over that in Chennai. Instead of assorted bags, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike can think of supplying high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bags at subsidised rates so that garbage can be put in and emptied.

Non-domestic units should be issued paper bags of adequate thickness and size, which could be burnt in dedicated incinerators.

Train needed

Sir, — There is no direct train from Hosur, a major industrial in Tamil Nadu, about 40 km from Bangalore, to Chennai.

The South Western Railway should introduce a night train between Bangalore and Chennai via Hosur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Jolarpettai, and Katpadi.
