Swelling mountain streams delay polling

By A.V. Ragunathan

CUDDALORE, MAY 10. Thanks to the incessant rain in the Kalvarayan Hills, electronic voting machines (EVMs) and other polling materials could be reached there only this morning. The hilly range within the Sankarapuram segment of the Cuddalore parliamentary constituency received copious rain in the past two days, and the streams were in spate.

Polling officials set out to the hills on Sunday afternoon. But the streams with swirling currents made it impossible for them to reach the three polling stations in the hills. They crossed over to the other side with tyres and tubes.

Voting started half- hour behind schedule, and the officials said the time lost would be compensated by extending the deadline to 5.30 p.m. (instead of 5 p.m.).

The people of Mattipattu, Mundiyur, Suradipattu, Kedar, Pacheri, Ezhundur and Vandagapadi were attached to the polling stations in the Hills.

In 10 other stations spread across Villupuram district also the commencement of polling was delayed by 30 minutes, as the officials were not familiar with the handling of EVMs.

Polling was delayed at Padur, Perangiyur in the Thiruvanavlur division, Kadampur in the Gingee Assembly segment, Avalurpettai in the Melmalaiyanur segment, Manalur and Memalur in the Rishivandiyam segment, and at Kanjanur and MRIC Higher Secondary School at Villupuram.

Employees of Electronic Corporation of India were deputed to these places to set right the EVMs.
