Results would be a warning to Government: VS

By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, MAY 10. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, has opined that the results of the 14th Lok Sabha election, which was held in the State today, would be a warning to the State Government.

Speaking to mediapersons after casting his vote at Panayamkulamgara High School, Punnapra, today, Mr. Achuthanandan said that he was sure that the people had used the election as an opportunity to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA Government at the centre and warn the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government in the State.

"The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, has become frantic after seeing the last- minute surge of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the State. The diluted secularism of the Congress would not have any takers in the State," Mr. Achuthanandan remarked. According to him, even the clergy had expressed their opposition to the Antony Government on several occasions.

Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that the UDF leaders had wrongly interpreted the statement of the former West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader, Jyoti Basu, to confuse voters. Mr. Basu had emphasised the need for a secular Government at the centre, pointed out Mr. Achuthanandan.

Referring to reports that the vote share of the BJP may increase in the State, the Leader of the Opposition said that a section of unhappy Congressmen might vote for the NDA. A large number of Congressmen in the State are unhappy over the internal bickering in the Congress. Some of them may vote for LDF candidates and a small fraction of them may cast their votes in favour of the BJP, he said.
