Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, MAY 10. With the stage set for counting of votes, political circles in Krishna district are busy calculating the prospects of the two main political parties, the Telugu Desam and the Congress, in the recently-concluded elections. Right from the time when the Telugu Desam fought its first election in 1983, Krishna district has been witnessing a strange shift in the voting pattern. The district has seen the TDP and its allies securing the same number of seats, though there was change in the constituencies, in successive elections twice, while it was humbled once. The TDP won 12 seats in 1983 and 1985 elections, leaving five seats to the main opposition Congress. After registering comfortable victories, the situation changed in the 1989 elections when the Congress won 13 seats, leaving four for the TDP and its allies, the Communists, owing to the anti-incumbency factor that swept across the State. The TDP, however, recovered in the subsequent elections held in 1994 and 1999, securing 12 seats in both the elections.
