MANAMA, MAY 11. In their biggest strike in two years, Palestinian militants have killed six Israeli troops by blowing up their armoured vehicle today. The Palestinian group Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a telephone call to the Arabic language Al Jazeera television station, Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades the armed wing of Hamas said it had carried out the strike. In the well-planned attack, the Israeli vehicle was first halted by armed men firing anti-tank missiles at a spot where explosive devices had been planted. The vehicle blew up with great force as it was carrying a large amount of ammunition. The Hamas has filmed the incident. A representative of the Islamic Jihad another armed Palestinian group that is known to be close to Hamas claimed responsibility for another attack on an Israeli tank today. The latest Israeli deaths are the worst single blow to the army since November 2002, when eight soldiers, along with a border patrol officer and three civilian guards, were killed in an ambush in the West Bank city of Hebron. Clashes with Palestinians erupted after Israeli forces began an incursion into Gaza city, to dismantle some of the metal workshops, which it said were being used to manufacture Qassem rockets.
