Top Hizb commander killed

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU, MAY 11. The top commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Shakeel Ansari, was shot dead by the Jammu and Kashmir police in a pre-dawn operation in the Soura area of Srinagar district.

Talking to The Hindu here, the Director-General of Police, Gopal Sharma, said, "This is a big blow to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and will affect their operations south of Pir Panjal.''

The militant carried a reward of over Rs. 10 lakhs on his head and the killing comes six days after the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen's chief operational commander for Jammu and Kashmir, Abdul Rashid Pir, was shot dead in an encounter in downtown Srinagar. Shekeel Ansari was the younger brother of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen's commander for Jammu division, Farooq Ansari, who was shot dead by troops in the Marmat forests of Jammu's Doda district three years ago.
