Congress improves tally in Cuddapah

CUDDAPAH, MAY. 11. The Congress registered an emphatic victory in Cuddapah, the native district of the probable Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, by winning nine of the 11 Assembly segments, a three-fold increase from three seats held by it in the dissolved Assembly.

On the other hand, the Telugu Desam Party suffered a major setback by winning only two Assembly seats, as against eight seats in its fold in the 1999 polls.

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy led the Congress bandwagon by winning the Pulivendula seat by a margin of 39,994 votes, and personally improved his margin by nearly 10,000 votes over the last poll. Dr. Reddy secured 73,556 votes and beat his nearest TDP rival, S.V. Satish Kumar Reddy, who got 33,639 votes. The Minister for Housing in the outgoing Chandrababu Naidu Government, P. Ramasubba Reddy, of the TDP, got 45,545 votes in Jammalamadugu constituency and lost tamely by a margin of 22,292 votes to the Congress candidate, Chadipiralla Adinarayana Reddy, who secured 67,837 votes.

The Cuddapah Municipal Chairman of Congress, Md. Ahmedullah, secured 75,615 votes and won the Cuddapah seat by a comfortable margin of 20,656 votes, over his nearest TDP rival and Politburo Member, Kandula Sivananda Reddy, who got 54,949 votes. The sitting Congress MLA, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, polled 54,419 votes to win the Proddatur seat for the fifth successive term with a margin of 17,029 votes over his nearest rival and TDP rebel, M. Linga Reddy, who got 37,390 votes. The BJP candidate, K. Balachandra Reddy, who was allotted the seat by the TDP, was relegated to the third position by securing 22,118 votes. The ex-MLA and Congress rebel, M.V. Ramana Reddy, followed with 18,458 votes.

The Congress candidate, D.L. Ravindra Reddy, who bagged 54,270 votes in Mydukur constituency won with a majority of 7,881 votes, over his nearest rival of the TDP, S. Raghurami Reddy, who got 46,389 votes. The fresh entrant of Congress, D.C. Govinda Reddy, secured 57,023 votes and won the Badvel seat by a margin of 5,281 votes over the sitting MLA, K. Vijayamma, of the TDP who secured 51,742 votes.

The former MLA, K. Prabhavathamma, of Congress polled 54,246 votes to win by a margin of 23,667 votes over her nearest TDP rival, P. Brahmaiah, who got 30,579 votes. The Congress candidate, G. Venkateswara Prasad, bagged 55,135 votes to win the Kodur (SC) seat by a margin of 16,422 votes, over the TDP's Y. Jayamma.

The sitting TDP MLA, S. Palakondarayudu, secured 51,026 votes to retain the Rayachoti seat by a margin of 3,486 votes over his nearest Congress rival, M. Srilatha Reddy, who got 47,482 votes. The former TDP MLA, G. Veerasiva Reddy, secured 57,542 votes and wrested the Kamalapuram seat by a margin of 11,234 votes against the Congress candidate, Putha Narasimha Reddy, who bagged 46,254 votes.
