Traffic on Raichur highway disrupted again

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR, MAY 11. Traffic on Raichur-Budgumpa State Highway was disrupted again today when activists of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged a rasta-roko at Jawalgera village on Tuesday.

Hundreds of farmers and activists of the sangha led by Chamrasa Malipatil, General Secretary of the sangha, staged a dharna on the highway. Traffic was disrupted for two hours. It resumed after farmers and activists of the sangha withdrew their agitation at 12.30 p.m. The activists have been protesting since May 4 demanding that the State Government take action to repair the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal. They have decided to continue their dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here till the Government approves a Rs. 37-crore package prepared by the Karnataka Niravari Nigam to repair the canal. The CPI-ML, which has been protesting since Sunday in support of the demand by the sangha, has decided to continue its dharna.

They seem not to be happy with the Minister for Water Resources (Krishna Basin), Allum Veerabhadrappa's announcement on Monday that the Government would take up the repair work on the canal and had decided to spend Rs. 4 crore on emergency work and had sanctioned Rs. 5 crore more for the purpose. They want the Government to approve the package prepared by the nigam.

Meanwhile, the hunger strike being staged here by the activists of the sangha entered the eighth day today. It is expected that the sangha may withdraw its hunger strike following an assurance by the Government to release Rs. 5 crore and float tenders to take up emergency work on the canal.

Mr. Malipatil told The Hindu that the president of the sangha's consultative committee, Chennabassappa Bettadur, visited the district hospital to inquire about the health of three activists who were admitted there on Saturday where they had continued their hunger strike. After a discussion with them, Mr. Bettadur told them to end their strike in the wake of the Government's assurance to release Rs. 5 crore to repair the canal.
