THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 11. As many as 7,61,713 voters representing 68.65 per cent of the total electorate in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency exercised their franchise at various polling centres on Monday in the elections to the Lok Sabha. Official figures released here today said the highest voting percentage was recorded in the Nemom Assembly segment and the lowest in the West segment. The following is the number of voters and the polling percentage in each Assembly constituency: Thiruvananthapuram North- 1,23,003 (65.33), West- 85,725 (63.31), East- 87,102 (66.2), Nemom- 1,24,676 (71.7), Kovalam- 1,16,657 (69.33), Neyyatinkara- 1,14,449 (71.37), Parassala- 1,10,101 (71.13). In the Chirayinkeezhu constituency, where the number of voters amounted to 6,68,267, the polling percentage was 65.64. The highest polling was recorded at Vamanapuram and the lowest at Kazhakuttam. The figures are as follows: Varkala- 83,525 (64.41), Attingal- 78,682 (64.37), Kilimanoor- 1,03,932 (65.07), Vamanapuram- 98,594 (68.10), Aryanad- 86,117 (65.49), Nedumangad- 1,14,201 (67.7) and Kazhakuttam- 1,03,216 (63.7).
Probe sought
The Kerala Matsya Thozhilali Congress alleged here today that thousands of UDF supporters in the coastal areas could not cast their votes on Thursday as their names did not figure in the voters list. In a pressnote issued here today, the Matsya Thozhilali Congress State working president, Veli Varghese, demanded an inquiry into the denial of voting rights. He said the officials responsible for preparation of voters list were politically biased.
Counting of votes
Counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections in Thiruvananthapuram district will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday at counting centres set up in each of the Assembly constituencies. The postal ballots will be counted at the Collectorate conference hall, an official pressnote issued here today said.
Telecast
The Doordarshan Kendra, Thiruvananthapuram, has made arrangements to telecast special election news and news analyses on May 13. The news bulletins and analyses will be telecast every 30 minutes from 7-30 a.m. onwards. Leading journalists will anchor the discussions, which will feature political leaders and experts in the social, economic and education sectors. Arrangements have been made to display flash news. The news unit of the All India Radio has drawn up plans to broadcast a special three-hour election-based programme. The live programme titled Janavidhi 2004 will discuss the trends and results from Kerala and outside. Senior journalists will interact with political leaders, candidates and AIR correspondents. There will be four short- duration hourly bulletins. The 12-30 p.m. news bulletin on Thursday will be of 20 minutes duration while the 6-20 p.m. bulletin will extend to 30 minutes.
