KURNOOL, May 12. New entrants have done extremely well in Kurnool district in the Assembly election. Kotla Sujathamma, wife of the DCC president, Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy, and daughter-in-law of Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy, became the centre of attraction in Kurnool district by defeating K.E. Prabhakar of the TDP by a margin of 2,609 votes in Dhone. This is the first time in 26 years that a member of the K.E. family lost the election in Dhone. The constituency was under the control of the K.E. brothers continuously except in 1994 when Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy wanted to contest from there. Mrs. Sujathamma fought a bitter battle against Mr. Prabhakar who was well entrenched there. Mr. Prabhakar went all out considering the mood of the voters against the TDP. Yet, Mrs. Sujathamma triumphed. She is likely to get a berth in the Cabinet. Another first entrant, Gouru Charita, who contested on the Congress ticket from Nandikotkur defeated Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy of the TDP, who hails from a politically influential family. Besides the wave in favour of the Congress, the sympathy generated due to a jail term for her husband, Gouru Venkat Reddy, enabled Ms Gouru Charita to trounce a political giant and win by a margin of 13,488 votes.
