Award for CSRTI

Mysore May 12. The Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute (CSRTI) here has won the National Technology Day Award for the development of Sampoorna, a maturation hormone for silkworm. In a press release, S.B. Dandin, director of the institute, said it bagged two awards of the Central Silk Board, which was given to the teams of scientists led by A. Sarkar and H.K. Basavaraj for the development of high-yielding mulberry genotypes for low input conditions and popularisation of production of double hybrids and viable sex-limited silkworm breeds. Besides the above, the institute had received the WIPO gold medal for the women inventor, Kanika Trivedi, for her contribution in developing a silkworm maturation hormone and the ASPEE Award for Satish Verma for development and commercialisation of mechanisation in sericulture. Hence the National Technology Day celebrated by the institute on Tuesday held special significance. Dr. Dandin said the programme was inaugurated by V. Raghuram, Regional Manager, National Research Development Corporation, Bangalore. In his inaugural address, Mr. Raghuram highlighted the achievements made by the institute in developing various technologies for the advancement of the sericulture industry.

Labourer killed

Udupi May 12. A labourer was killed when he slipped and fell into a well which he was digging at Tenkanidiyoor in Malpe Police Station limits on Tuesday evening. Lakshman Rangappa Bandikere from Hirebudihal in Badami taluk of Bagalkot district was digging a well at a house when he slipped and fell down. Bandikere, who suffered severe injuries, was rushed to the District Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A case has been registered at the Malpe Police Station.

Buried alive

BELLARY May 12. A labourer was buried alive and three others sustained injuries when a portion of mud caved in at a work site on Wednesday. The labourers were digging the foundation for a shopping complex near Sudha Cross. The mud, which was put aside, and a portion of land caved in on them. The police, along with the fire services personnel, rescued three persons. The police took them to VIMS Hospital. They are said to be out of danger. The deceased has been identified as Vekatesh (35) of Konapur village in Molakalmooru taluk. The injured are Linganna (18) and Marenna (32) from the same village and Hanumanthappa (19). The Cowl Bazaar police have registered a case.

Selected for art festival

Udupi May 12. Purshotham Adve, artist, has been selected for the Bangalore Art Festival to be organised by the Mantram Art Foundation, Bangalore, in June. A press release issued here on Wednesday said eminent artists such as M.F. Hussain, Jatin Das and Aparna Kaur would participate in the festival. Young artists such as Mr. Adve would get an opportunity to exhibit their talent in the festival, and also an opportunity to interact with senior and noted artists.
