NEW DELHI, MAY 12. IDEA Cellular Ltd., which has over 35 lakh subscribers in 11 telecom circles, has launched a new e-mail solution for its pre-paid as well as post-paid mobile subscribers. The service enables IDEA subscribers to access and read their e-mails through their mobiles anywhere, anytime. Moreover, subscribers can also send and receive SMS (short messaging service) to the people connected to Internet. Interestingly, to use the service, an IDEA mobile number becomes an e-mail address while its advanced features also allow a user to use an address similar to the web. E-mail on mobile from IDEA also offers other tools that include address book and signature that can be used while sending and receiving e-mails from the handsets. To access the service, subscribers only need to have an existing and valid Web based e-mail accounts like Yahoo, Hotmail or Rediffmail. The subscriber can also access office e-mails on his mobile if it is a "POP3" e-mail account. Even if he doesn't have any e-mail ID, he can still send and receive e-mails from a unique e-mail ID provided by IDEA. So, whether the person has an access to the Internet or not, he can still read his e-mails. According to Vikram Mehmi, CEO, IDEA Cellular Ltd., "With this new facility of e-mail on mobile, we are attempting to bring to our subscribers the Worldwide Web in their palms and offer great convenience of access to email whenever they want or wherever they want." A simple configuration allows the subscriber to add a new mailbox, by providing necessary details just once. The subscriber has to sms "MAIL" to 1111. This also allows the user to define a friendly name like "ymail" for Yahoo or "hot1" for Hotmail to the mailbox. Interestingly, a subscriber can also create an address book, have an e-mail alias, add his e-mail signature, access different mail accounts at the same time, read and send reply.
