Rare gesture makes Konappa an MLA

By Our Correspondent

ADILABAD, MAY 12. Thanks to an unusual move by Sultan Ahmed, veteran Congressman in Adilabad district, Koneru Konappa became an MLA from Sirpur Assembly constituency. Such gestures are rare in life, more so in politics.

Mr. Sultan Ahmed, a beedi leaf contractor and former Zilla Parishad chairman in Adilabad was given the ticket from Sirpur while Mr. Konappa was a very strong contender for it. The notable factor was that he had not applied for a ticket! Mr. Sultan Ahmed made known his surprise and unpreparedness for contesting an election from Sirpur where he would be an outsider. (He belongs to Chennur constituency which is reserved for SC). He had also realised the impropriety of marring the chances of Mr. Konappa did lot of ground work over the years. Mr. Sultan Ahmed had already lost the Lok Sabha elections from Adilabad.

With hardly any time left for close of nominations in March end, Mr. Sultan Ahmed accompanied by Mr. Konappa flew to Delhi to the Congress leadership. To everyone's surprise he demanded the ticket be given to

Mr. Konappa. His wish was granted and today the latter is an MLA.
