NEW DELHI, MAY 12. The Election Commission has ordered a full-fledged inquiry into the reports of largescale deletion of names from the voters' lists in a few States, particularly Tamil Nadu, the Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, said here today. Talking to some journalists, Mr. Krishnamurthy said that if any lapse or negligence was found on the part of officials, stringent action would be taken. He admitted that despite the EC's best efforts in the preparation of electoral rolls, there were complaints of missing names. "It is a cause of concern for us. This problem was more in urban areas than in rural areas." The Commission depended on State Government officials for enrolment, as it was an on-going exercise. Mr. Krishnamurthy blamed the political parties and the candidates for not bringing the issue to the EC's notice even though they had been provided copies of the updated rolls.
