Krishna sees anti-BJP wave

Bangalore May 12. The verdict of the people of Andhra Pradesh showed that the anti-Vajpayee wave was blowing in that State, the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has said. He was having a chat with presspersons today after inspecting the arrangements made by the State Department of Information for the dissemination of election results from the media centre opened at Cubbon Park. Mr. Krishna said that an anti-BJP wave was in evidence in the neighbouring State. The Congress would also do well in Karnataka, Mr. Krishna said and discounted any chance of a hung assembly in the State.

Poll results on website

BANGALORE MAY 12. For the benefit of the public and presspersons, the Information Department has made arrangements to post the Assembly election results on a website on Thursday. The results of the elections in the 28 Lok Sabha and 224 Assembly constituencies will be available at website: Karnatakapollresults.com. The department has also made arrangements to receive poll results from the district centres in the State as early as possible. The total number of votes polled and those polled by the candidates will be posted on the Internet. The photographs of prominent winners and losers in the elections will also be provided on the net, an official press note says.

Two expelled from Congress

Bangalore May 12. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee has been quick to expel from the primary membership of the party L.N. Murthy and Anjana Reddy, who levelled charges against the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), B. Janardhana Poojary, at a press conference here on Tuesday. They have been expelled for a period of six years for breach of party discipline and levelling serious and irresponsible allegations against the leadership. The decision to expel them was taken by the disciplinary committee of the KPCC headed by H. Hanumanthappa. The consent of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) was taken with regard to the decision, the KPCC General Secretrary, Prakash K. Rathod said in a statement to the press. While Mr. Murthy is a member of the KPCC, Mr. Anjan Reddy is a member of the AICC. They had criticised Mr. Poojary with regard to the selection of candidates for the Assembly election.

Farmer commits suicide

HASSAN MAY 12. Nanjappa (60) of Moolekalenahalli in Holenarsipur taluk reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday by consuming poison, according to the police. It is learnt that he was unable to repay a loan of Rs. 25,000 taken from a nationalised bank and Rs. 20,000 borrowed from a moneylender to cultivate one acre of land. As the crops failed owing to lack of rainfall, Nanjappa committed suicide, it is learnt.

Applications invited for awards

BANGALORE MAY 12. The Department of Forest, Ecology, and Environment has invited applications for the "Rajiv Gandhi Parisara Prashasti" for 2004-05. The awards, which are given in recognition of the contribution made by individuals and organisations to the protection of environment, comprise a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation, says an official press note. The awards are given for exemplary work carried out in each of the specified regions of the State — malnad, coastal, old Mysore, Hyderabad-Karnataka, Mumbai-Karnataka, and Bangalore (Urban and Rural districts). Two awards — one in the individual category and another in the organisation category — will be given in each of the regions. A total of 12 awards will be given for the entire State. Completed applications along with documents may be sent to the Secretary (Ecology and Environment), Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, Seventh Floor, Multi-storeyed Building, Bangalore — 560 001 on or before May 20. Ban orders in Tumkur district

TUMKUR MAY 12. Curbs have been imposed on movement of people in the surroundings of two buildings here in which counting of votes in the elections to the Tumkur Lok Sabha seat and 13 Assembly seats from the district will be taken up on Thursday morning. Ban orders under Section 144 of the Cr.P.C. have been imposed in Tumkur city and 10 taluk headquarters in the district from 6 a.m. on Thursday. The ban orders, it is learnt, will remain in force as long as the district authorities require. Counting of votes for the Bellavi, Tumkur, Kunigal, Huliyurudurga, and C.N. Halli Assembly segments will be conducted in the Government Polytechnic building, and that for the Gubbi, Turuvekere, and Tiptur segments in the adjacent Government Science College building. These eight segments form the Tumkur Lok Sabha Constituency. Of the remaining five Assembly segments of the district, Madhugiri and Koratagere are under the Chickballapur Lok Sabha Constituency, and Kallambella and Pavagada under the Chitradurga Lok Sabha Constituency. The two counting centres are located on Bangalore-Honnavar National Highway No. 206, which passes through Tumkur. Barricades have been erected on either side of the stretch of the road in front of the two buildings. The authorities have appealed to the public to desist from gathering in the surroundings of the centres. Arrangements for telecasting the counting details on a local cable TV channel have been made. In the past, people used to throng the premises of the counting centres. As electronic voting machines are being used, the counting, which will begin at 8 a.m., is expected to be over before noon.

Bank to be computerised

HASSAN MAY 12. Hassan City Cooperative Bank will be computerised soon to extend speedy and efficient service to its customers, according to the chairman of the bank, H.N. Phanish.

In a press release here on Wednesday, he said though there were 13,000 account holders, the bank was not in a position to serve them to their satisfaction. In view of this, it had been decided to computerise the services of the bank by spending Rs. 4 lakh. The bank, which had been sanctioning loans up to Rs. 2.50 lakh, had plans to double the amount. It had plans to open more branches in the city. The bank had sanctioned loans amounting to Rs. 5.67 crore, he added.

Dies in accident

UDUPI MAY 12. A woman was reportedly knocked down fatally by a motorcycle at Salmara in Karkala town on Wednesday.

Chandramma (65), a resident of Shivapura, was crossing a road when the accident occurred. She died at the government hospital.

A case has been booked at the Karkala Town Police Station.

Copra prices up

HASSAN MAY 12. Prices of copra have increased due to the fall in supply, according to the secretary of the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), G. Krishnappa. He said the price, which was Rs. 5,340 a quintal a fortnight ago, increased to Rs. 6,230 on Tuesday. The price was Rs. 4,480 a quintal last year, he added. A trader said the market had not witnessed an increase in the price of copra in the past six years and it was in January 1998, it went up to Rs. 6,200 a quintal. Mr. Krishnappa expected a further rise in the prices of copra.

Counselling

MYSORE MAY 12. Prerana Guidance and Counselling Centre will hold a free guidance and counselling programme for students who have failed to clear the 10th Standard examination.

Experienced teachers, memory trainers and counsellors of the centre will conduct the programme. Methods of preparing for the examination by avoiding stress and anxiety will be taught to students. Interested students may contact Sadvidya School at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Camp

MYSORE MAY 12. Almanac International Voluntary Adventure Club will conduct an adventure programme for children in the eight to 16 age group. The camp will include rock climbing, rappelling, river crossing, treasure hunt, trekking, nature awareness, at Kuntibetta hills, near Pandavapura and parasailing at Mandakalli airstrip.

MYSORE MAY 12. The JSS Industrial Training Centre, Nanjangud, in association with the Women's Development Corporation, will conduct a free three-month beautician and healthcare course. Women in the 18 to 45 age group can participate. Details may be had on Ph: 226985.

Contest

MYSORE MAY 12. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Institution of Engineering will organise Cogniscience 2004, a State-level paper presentation contest, on Saturday.

A press release said that 32 papers had been short-listed from different fields of mechanical, industrial and production and automobile engineering. Engineering students from across the State would take part in the contest.
