Partly cloudy

CHENNAI, MAY 12. The sky will be partly cloudy on Thursday. Development of thunder clouds possible towards evening or night. The maximum temperature will be around 39 degree Celsius.

Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 38.9 degree Celsius on Wednesday and a minimum temperature of 28.3 degree Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 39.0 and a minimum of 28.2 degree Celsius. Humidity levels stood at 64 per cent and 61 per cent respectively.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday in Rajajipuram, Jatkapuram, Venkatrayan Street and parts of Walltax Road (all in Park Town area) for maintenance work.

Helpline

Sneha, a voluntary organisation extending emotional support to the depressed, desperate and suicidal, will launch a round-the-clock helpline - telephone no. 28352345 - on May 15 for students and parents. According to a press release, through the service it intends to help the students, whose academic results have been declared, to overcome the emotional crisis that they might encounter. Callers will be offered total confidentiality and anonymity. The 24-hour helpline will be available till May 30.

Medical camp

A free medical camp for patients suffering from throat and tonsils problems will be organised by KKR ENT Hospital and Research Institute between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The hospital had recently acquired ultrasonic scalpel, a latest surgical instrument for surgery of the tonsils and adenoids. Surgery using the scalpel is `completely bloodless' and the pain for the patients is relatively less. Those undergoing tonsils and adenoids surgery with the ultrasonic scalpel will be offered concessional rates of treatment, according to a press release.

Free camp

A free camp for people suffering from epilepsy will be organised between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday at Sarala Neurology Hospital and Research Centre on Poonamallee High Road, Kilpauk. According to a press release, a neurological checkup will be done and medicines will be distributed. The Lions Club of Madras Excellence is sponsoring the programme. The Dhanraj Baid Jain College in Thorapakkam will conduct a free coaching programme from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday for those taking the MCA entrance, AIMCET and TANCET examinations. Contact: 24961684/24964209.

Elected

Ashok Bhandari and Sanjay Bhansali have been elected president and secretary respectively of the Rajasthan Youth Association, which runs a book bank project for college students.

Eye camp

One hundred and four patients were screened at a free eye camp organised today by Hindu Mission Hospital with volunteers of Bharatiya Janata Party at Kadapari Ward No.1 of Tambaram Municipality. Seven of the patients were recommended for free eye surgery at the base hospital, a press release said.

Pollution levels

The particulate matter in the ambient air at a traffic intersection in Kilpauk during 24-hours from 6 a.m. on May 11 was 209 microgram per cubic metre. The permissible limit is 200 mcg/cm. The respirable suspended particulate matter in the same period was 96 mcg/cm as against the permissible limit of 100 mcg/cm. On the same day, the PM and RSPM in Adyar was 69 and 41 mcg/cm respectively, according to the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board.
