A positive change, says MIM

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 12. The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) has welcomed the rout of the Telugu Desam Party and feels it is a "positive change". Muslims played a significant role in the massive mandate secured by the Congress as they voted en bloc to it, said Asaduddin Owaisi, party's candidate for the Hyderabad parliamentary seat.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said the unprecedented mandate got by the Congress had put a heavy responsibility on it. The minorities had lots of expectations of it. Mr. Asaduddin hoped the Congress government would give BC status to Muslims in the State by reviving the backward classes commission. The minorities should be given a substantial percentage in the housing. Government should allocate a minimum of Rs. 75 crores for minority education besides sanction of Rs. 100 crores to the Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority for overall development of the old city.

Mr. Asadduddin sought revival of the Setwin, direct lending to the Minority Finance Corporation since banks were not coming forward to release loans.

To a question, Mr. Asaduddin said there was a big difference between the Congress leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the outgoing Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu. The Majlis president, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, too felt the minorities would be better off under Mr. Reddy. "He is good and secular," Mr. Owaisi remarked.

To a question, he said the Majlis would play the role of a constructive opposition and support the government in its efforts to help the common man. Mr. Asaduddin demanded resignation of all those who were nominated by the Telugu Desam government. The chairman of the State Wakf Board, Mohd. Saleem, the president of the A.P. Urdu Academy, Ibrahim Bin Abdullah Masqati, State Haj Committee chairman, Ghouse Mohiuddin, and chairman, Minorities Finance Corporation should tender their resignations, he said.

Upbeat at its good performance, the Majlis is hopeful of winning the Hyderabad parliamentary seat with good majority. Based on the votes polled by it in the four Assembly segments in the city, the party has done some quick calculation and is confident of securing handsome majority. Meanwhile, there was a huge rush at the Majlis office in Dar-us-Salam on Wednesday with people turning up in large numbers to congratulate Mr. Owaisi on his party's success in the Assembly elections.
