ISLAMABAD, MAY 12. The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Christina Rocca today briefed Pakistan about America's plans for a new resolution on Iraq, to be submitted to the Security Council. Ms. Rocca called on the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, the Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, and the Foreign Minister, Khurshid M. Kasuri, and exchanged views on a wide range of issues. An official statement by Pakistan was silent on the details of the briefing given by Ms. Rocca on the new resolution and the response of Islamabad to it. A few days ago, the U.S. had made an official request to Pakistan to contribute troops to safeguard the proposed United Nations mission in Iraq. Pakistan is yet to make up its mind on the request. Indications from diplomatic sources are that the U.S. would strive for a new U.N. resolution, positioning a multinational force in Iraq and it would like Pakistan to be a part of it. As things stand, Pakistan is not enthused over the prospect of sending forces to Iraq. Mr. Kasuri told Ms. Rocca that he was looking forward to meeting the Secretary of State, Colin Powell, during his visit to the U.S. where he would also preside over a session of the Security Council. Ms. Rocca, in her interaction with Gen. Musharraf, exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, such as war against terrorism, actions against terrorists in Wana, bilateral relations, and the latest situation in Iraq and Afghanistan and some other regional and international issues. They also reviewed the progress relating to the confidence-building measures and composite talks between Pakistan and India.
