This Day That Age
The Madras Assembly on May 13 adopted a non-official resolution, expressing "grave concern over the growing deterioration of the condition of Ceylon nationals of Indian origin" after the signing of the Indo-Ceylon agreement and urging that steps be taken to arrest the worsening situation. An amendment was moved recommending early arrangements with Ceylon to enable Indian nationals resident in Ceylon to carry on their lawful occupations and make remittances to their dependents in India, but after discussion it was withdrawn and the main resolution passed. Mr. C. Subramaniam, Leader of the House, replying to the debate, said they were interested in maintaining the friendliest of relations with neighbouring countries and if only that feeling were reciprocated, even the most difficult problem could be solved. He appealed to the mover not to press the amendment.
