Israeli missile strikes kill 10 Palestinians

By Atul Aneja

MANAMA, MAY 13. At least 10 Palestinian have been killed in Israeli missile attacks on a refugee camp in Gaza, close to the border with Egypt. In the first strike, seven people preparing to plant explosive devices were killed, the Israeli army said.

Reports have been coming in of a second attack on a crowd in the Rafah refugee camp, in which three people died and a dozen were wounded.

The Israeli army has been operating near Gaza's border with Egypt, a day after Palestinian militants killed five Israeli troops after blowing up the armoured vehicle in which they were travelling.

The Israeli army said it was widening the buffer zone along the Gaza border which it controls, and several Palestinian houses in this area have been either occupied or destroyed.

Meanwhile, Israeli troops have withdrawn from Gaza city's Zeitoun neighbourhood after obtaining the remains of six of its soldiers who were killed when the Palestinian armed group, Hamas, blew up their armoured personnel carrier on Tuesday.

Israeli authorities received the remains at the Ezer crossing with Gaza following mediation by the Egyptians. Israeli forces, throughout on Wednesday, combed the heavily populated district for the remains, as snipers occupied rooftops and Apache helicopters hovered overhead.

Navy gunboats also shelled the coast and fired upon an area, not far from the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's old compound. Israeli attacks, prior to Thursday's strikes, had killed at least 14 Palestinians and wounded more than 170.

Palestinian militants on Wednesday destroyed the second Israeli troop carrier after it lay exposed on open ground between the Rafah refugee camp and the Egyptian border, using a rocket-propelled grenade.

The carrier, which was part of convoy travelling on the border road exploded quickly as it was packed with ammunition used for destroying tunnels along the border, through which weapons are smuggled.
