MOSCOW: Russia and Uzbekistan agreed to upgrade their defence cooperation in a fresh indication that the two countries are overcoming a recent cooling in bilateral ties. The Russian and Uzbek militaries will hold joint war games next year, the Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Ivanov, said after talks in Tashkent on Wednesday. He also invited Uzbekistan to attend as an observer anti-terror manoeuvres to be held later this year by the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, which unites six former Soviet republics, including Uzbekistan's neighbours Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The upswing in relations with Uzbekistan is all the more important for Moscow as it comes amid new problems in its relations with Tajikistan. Russia's First Deputy Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Trubnikov, confirmed on Wednesday that Russian border guards are about to leave Tajikistan at its request.
