Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MAY 13. With the Pattali Makkal Katchi (a constituent of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Democratic Progressive Alliance) candidate, M. Ramadoss, emerging victorious in the Pondicherry Lok Sabha poll, DPA volunteers today burst crackers outside the Bharathidasan Government College for Women, where counting was held. Mr. Ramadoss, a senior professor of Pondicherry University, was felicitated when he came to the counting hall to get the certificate of election from the Returning Officer, V. Candavelou. He told newsmen that he was grateful to the people of Union Territory for electing him. The team spirit of DPA leaders was chiefly responsible for the win. He said he would strive to ameliorate the lot of the people and take efforts to formulate economic and welfare policies. He thanked the DPA leaders and the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, and his Cabinet colleagues and legislators. This is the first victory for the PMK in the Lok Sabha poll here. Mr. Ramadoss had contested the 1999 poll unsuccessfully. The Congress held the seat in the dissolved Lok Sabha. Mr. Ramadoss defeated the Bharathiya Janata Party's Lalitha Kumaramangalam by a margin of 69,181 votes. While Mr. Ramadoss got 2,41,653 votes, Ms. Lalitha Kumaramangalam polled 1,72,472.
