Letters to the Editor
Sir, The high-flying CEO of Andhra Pradesh has not only been shown the door but has also been pushed to the wall since the public perception was that he is indifferent and insensitive to the problems of the people. A.U.S. Lal, Ganjam, Orissa * * * Sir, Your editorial on the rout of the Telugu Desam Party, "Lessons from Andhra Pradesh" (May 12), strikes the right note saying Chandrababu Naidu "surrounded himself with a clutch of bureaucrats and technocrats and was gradually starved of authentic feedback ... " As for the pro-rich image undoing Mr. Naidu, it would be interesting to wait for the percentage of voters who did not exercise their franchise in all the constituencies where the TDP lost. It would be a fair guess to say that most of the defaulters would have been the direct beneficiaries of Mr. Naidu's techno-savvy approach. The Congress in Tamil Nadu lost to the DMK in 1967 because it did not treat the rice scarcity with the concern it deserved. Another State Government lost the elections because it could not handle the soaring prices of onions. If anything, the general elections in India are centred round the basic needs and aspirations of the people and not other intellectual issues. Raghu Tagat, Chennai
