Postal votes prove decisive in Hindupur

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MAY 13. The Congress has wrested the two Lok Sabha seats in the district from the TDP. While the result in Hindupur seat was a photo-finish as expected, it was an easy win for the Congress in Anantapur. A. Venkatarami Reddy won Anantapur with a majority of 73,421 votes defeating K. Srinivasulu of the TDP.

First timer, Karnal Nizamuddin of the Congress scraped through against B.K. Parthasarathi of TDP in Hindupur with a majority of 1,840 votes, thanks to the postal votes. The TDP suffered heavily in the Anantapur due to cross voting. Mr. Srinivasulu did not get even 10 per cent of the Assembly winners' majority in two of the three seats won by the TDP. On the other hand, the Congress candidate Mr. Venkatarami Reddy almost doubled the votes of the party candidates' majority in three of the four Assembly seats won by the party.

The TDP candidate had pinned hopes only on cross-voting this time but to no avail.

For Hindupur Lok Sabha seat, cross-voting was not much significant except in Dharmavaram, where the TDP candidate, Mr. Parthasarathi secured 7,580 votes majority against 3,787 by the party's Assembly winner. The community vote helped the Congress candidate, Mr. Nizamauddin in Kadiri segment, where he secured a majority of 15,591 votes against 8,938 majority polled by the Assembly winner.

In Gorantla, the Congress candidate secured 4,092 votes lead over TDP, as against just 181 secured by the Assembly winner. Like N. Kistappa of the TDP in Gorantla, Mr. Parthasarathi's fate was sealed by the postal ballots in Hindupur Lok Sabha seat. Of the 2,657 postal votes polled Mr. Nizamauddin secured 1,874 against 773 by Mr. Parthasarathi.
