Prince of Arcot greets Sonia
CHENNAICHENNAITIRUCHICHENNAICHENNAI, MAY 13.MAY 13.MAY 13 The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, today expressed the hope that the Congress and other secular and democratic parties, who had "won sufficient seats to form a secular government at the Centre, would put an end to the bloodshed and communal disharmony created by vested interests." In a message to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, he said the country had entrusted with the Congress and its allies, the responsibility of providing a stable and democratic government. "We are confident that the government under your able and dynamic leadership will defend and protect the minorities." T. Vellaiyan, president, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, attributed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's "wrong economic policies" to its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. In a statement here, he said the BJP-led government had ignored the welfare of the public. Factors such as dumping of foreign goods, crisis faced by indigenous industry, unemployment, loss of purchasing power, collapse of retail trade by introducing service tax and central value added tax etc., due to implementation of liberalisation, were primarily responsible for the change at the Centre, he claimed. He urged the new government to declare Gandhian economy as its policy. S. Sheik Dawood, president, Tamil Maanila Muslim League, said in a statement here, the party fielded its candidates in all the 40 constituencies in the State and the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The party candidates were able to secure around 20 lakh votes, he said.
