Kuppusami wins by the highest margin

CHENNAI, MAY 13. C. Kuppusami of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has the distinction of winning by the highest margin of about 2.53 lakh votes from the Chennai north constituency in the Lok Sabha election, counting for which was held here today. He defeated M.N.Sukumaran Nambiar of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The lowest margin was recorded by J.M.Haroon Rashid (Congress), who secured 21,155 more votes than his rival T.T.V.Dinakaran of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the Periyakulam constituency.

Seven other candidates won by a margin of more than two lakh votes, including R.Prabhu (Congress) from Nilgiris, T. R. Baalu (DMK) from south Chennai, E.V.K.S.Elangovan (Congress) from Gopichettipalayam and L.Ganesan (MDMK) from Tiruchi.

Sixteen candidates emerged victorious with more than 1.5 lakh votes, six each of the DMK and the Congress, two of the MDMK and one each of the CPI (M) and CPI.

E.Ponnusami and K.Dhanraj, both of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), won with less than one lakh margin. The rest of the Democratic Progressive Alliance candidates won by a margin of more than one lakh votes.
