BELLARY, MAY 13. The BJP created history by winning the Bellary Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency had returned Congress candidates in all the elections held since 1952. G. Karunakar Reddy defeated the Congress candidate, K.C. Kondaiah, by 31,679 votes. The BJP came close to victory in the previous elections in 1999 when Sushma Swaraj lost to the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, by a margin of 56,100 votes. Mr. Reddy polled 3,18,978 votes, while his nearest rival, Mr. Kondaiah, secured 2,87,299 votes. The Janata Dal (S) candidate, Gulagi Nagaraj was third, polling 2,47,842 votes. Mr. Karunakar Reddy attributed his victory to the sound foundation laid by Ms. Swaraj, the achievements of the NDA Government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and the people, especially the youth, who wanted a change.
