Venkataswamy leads the `one-lakh plus' group

HYDERABAD: G. Venkataswamy, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, has the distinction of scoring the highest margin of victory - 263,135 votes - from the Peddapalli (SC) constituency. He defeated C. Sugunakumari of the TDP, who got 309,072 ballots. On the other hand, Nizamuddin, also of Congress just about managed to scrape through and win the Hindupur seat by a margin of 1,840.

The other candidates who won by margins of over one lakh were -- T. Vinod Kumar (TRS-Hanamkonda, 261,718 votes), S. Jaipal Reddy (Cong.-Miryalguda, 216,907), Chinta Mohan (Cong.-Tirupati, 199,321), V. Arun Kumar (Cong.-Rajahmundry, 148,820), S. Satyanarayana (Cong.-Siddipet, 138,972), K. Chandrasekhar Rao (TRS-Karimnagar, 131,168), Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy (Cong.-Cuddapah, 131,137), R. Sambasiva Rao (Cong.-Guntur, 129,792), P. Laxmi (Cong.-Nellore, 127,374), A. Narendra (TRS-Medak, 126,487), N. Janardhana Reddy (Cong.-Visakhapatnam, 126,449), K.Sambasiva Rao (Cong.-Eluru, 123,291), L. Rajagopal (Cong.-Vijayawada, 114,587), S.P.Y.Reddy (Cong.-Nandyal, 111,676), Renuka Choudhury (Cong.-Khammam, 110, 901), M. Sreenivasulu Reddy (Cong.-Ongole, 106,021), K. Jayasurya Prakash Reddy (Cong.-Kurnool, 100, 771) and Asaduddin Owaisi (MIM-Hyderabad, 100,345).

Celebration time at Gandhi Bhavan

HYDERABAD: In a repeat of the victory celebrations of Assembly elections, groups of Congress workers shouting slogans of `Congress Zindabad' and `Sonia Gandhi Zindabad' invaded Gandhi Bhavan, the APCC headquarters, as the results of the Lok Sabha started pouring in.

They shook hands, embraced each other, sprayed coloured powder, distributed sweets and danced to drumbeats. Even some of the senior leaders were forced to join in the merry making that went on till evening. Among those who missed the celebrations was the APCC president, D. Srinivas, who had rushed to Delhi to meet the AICC leaders.

Postal ballots found invalid

KAKINADA: As was the case with the Assembly elections, almost one-fifth of the postal ballots in Kakinada Lok Sabha constituency were found to be invalid owing to non-compliance of the procedure laid down by the Election Commission. The East Godavari district Collector, K. S. Jawahar Reddy, who is the returning officer for the Kakinada Lok Sabha constituency, said he was surprised to see that those who had cast their votes through postal ballot, though educated and employed, failed to follow the rules. While some of them did not put their serial number of the ballot paper on the format, some others forgot to submit the format while a few others forgot to sign the format.

Elected leader of CPI(M) Legislature Party

HYDERABAD: Nomula Narsimhaiah was elected leader and M. A. Ghafoor, deputy leader of the nine-member Communist Party of India-Marxist Legislature Party at a meeting here on Thursday. Sunnam Rajaiah is the Chief Whip. The Politburo member, Koratala Satyanarayana, presided over the meeting. The CPI(M) State Secretary, B.V.Raghavulu, was also present.

Situation peaceful after group clash

NELLORE: The situation at Tatichetlapalem village in Bogole mandal of Nellore district, where the police had to open fire in the air to disperse two warring groups, on Wednesday night, returned to normalcy. Trouble broke out between the Congress and Telugu Desam Party groups over an issue pertaining to auctions, resulting in the clash. The police rushed to the spot and had to fire in the air to control the situation. According to the Superintendent of Police, K.V. Rajendranath Reddy, additional police forces have been posted in the area as a matter of precaution.

Minister's supporter commits suicide? ELURU: A fan of the former TDP Minister, Kotagiri Vidyadhara Rao, reportedly committed suicide on Thursday following the leader's defeat in Chintalapudi in the Assembly elections.

According to the Kovvuru DSP, N. Balaji Rao, the youth, V. Nagaraju (28) of Jangareddigudem, dejected by the defeat of his leader, came to Kovvuru on a two-wheeler and ended his life by jumping into the Godavari river from Dhaveleswaram bridge near Kovvuru.

The body was traced and handed over to the victim's family.

20 injured in bus-lorry collision

ADILABAD: A one-and-half-year old girl fractured her left arm in a collision involving an RTC bus and a lorry at the Devapur crossing about 9 km from here, at about 11.30 a.m. on Thursday. Nineteen others who were also injured were hospitalised at the Government headquarter hospital. The RTC bus belonging to Utnoor depot was travelling towards Asifabad when a lorry coming from the opposite direction collided head on with the bus. Of the 35 passengers travelling in the bus 20 were injured.

Southwest monsoon advances

VISAKHAPATNAM: The southwest monsoon advanced on Thursday into the South Andaman Sea and parts of southeast Bay of Bengal. Conditions were favourable for further advance over the north Andaman Sea and some more parts of the Bay during the next 48 hours, according to a bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

Isolated rain or thundershower forecast

Hyderabad: There was rain at a few places in Telangana on Thursday while it was isolated in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Visakhapatnam and Dundigal recorded a rainfall of 2 cm each and Hyderabad and Kalingapatnam 1 cm each. Day temperatures rose at a few places in Coastal Andhra but fell at a few places in Telangana. They changed a little in Rayalaseema. The highest day temperature in State for the 24-hour period ending Thursday morning was recorded at 42 degree C at two places -- Medak and Rentachintala.

The forecast for Friday, issued by the State Met Office here was that there would be isolated rain/thundershowers in Coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Teacher's gesture

ANANTAPUR: A teacher of the Government Degree College here, T.A. Shivashankar Reddy, has offered to contribute one day's salary every month for the cause of free power supply to the agriculture sector, promised by the Congress. The mathematics lecturer wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary promisisng to contribute about Rs. 800 per month, if a fund is formed for the purpose of free power supply to the farm sector. Mr. Reddy had also contributed a day's salary every month for the Rs. 2-per-kg rice scheme introduced by the former Chief Minister, late N.T. Rama Rao. He had contributed the amount till the scheme was in operation.

RTA member resigns

CUDDAPAH: The Telugu Desam Party leader, L. Madhusudan Reddy, on Thursday resigned from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) member post, on account of the TDP's poll debacle in the State. In a statement, he thanked the RTO, his staff and mediapersons for their cooperation.

Plans for artificial rain

ANANTAPUR: The Congress Government would take up experiments for artificial rains immediately in the State, the party leaders N. Raghuveera Reddy, A. Venkatarami Reddy and D. Nizamuddin stated here. The Government would also initiate steps to set up a permanent radar station in the district. The promise of free power supply to the agriculture sector would come into force from Friday itself, they stated. The Congress Government would be committed to the time-bound completion of Handri-Neeva project, allocation of 10 tmc ft water to Penna Ahobilam balancing reservoir and would also make efforts to realise the Tungabhadra flood flow canal with the cooperation of Karnataka.

Foundation stone smashed

CHITTOOR: The foundation stone laid before the elections by the former ministers B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, Thummala Nageswara Rao and Kothapalli Subbarayudu for the construction of shopping complex in the premises of old bus stand was smashed to pieces. The walls constructed on the pathway for buses to enter the stand were also found destroyed. The bus stand was closed before the election by the TDP functionaries.
