RAIPUR, MAY 13. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's niece, Karuna Shukla, is the lone woman candidate to make it to the Lok Sabha from Chhattisgarh. Mrs. Shukla, who is the vice-president of the BJP, won the Janjgir seat in her maiden entry into the Lower House, defeating two- time winner and Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress committee working president, Charan Das Mahant. She won the seat by a margin of about 12,000 votes. However, former minister Ganga Potai (Congress) who contested for the Kanker-ST constituency lost the elections to Sohan Potai (BJP) by a margin of more than 73626 votes. Both the ruling BJP and the opposition had fielded only one woman candidate each in the State, having 11 Lok Sabha constituencies. Of the total 11 woman candidates, nine, including one of the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) and Independents, could not even make their presence felt in the elections.
