ERODE, MAY 13 . With the Congress having bagged the seat after three decades, it has created a dent in the AIADMK's bastion Gobichettipalayam. The Congress candidate for the Gobichettipalayam Parliamentary constituency, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, defeated his nearest AIADMK rival, N.R. Govindarajar, by a margin of 2,14,477 votes. The counting of votes for the constituency took place at the Institute of Road and Transport Technology Engineering College, Chitode, amidst tight police and paramilitary security. Result: Total votes - 10,55,067 (including postal ballots), Polled - 6,80,240, Invalid - 137. The break up of votes is as follows: Mr. Elangovan (Congress) - 4,26,826, Mr. Govindarajar (AIADMK) - 2,12,349, K.K. Muthuswamy (BSP) - 6,039, B.K. Aruljothi (Janata Party) - 5,225, Malathi Shanmugam (Tamil Desiya Katchi) - 1,795, Kanniyan (Ind) - 1,311, S.R. Karuppusamy (Ind) - 1,315, S. Selvan (Ind) - 1,503, P. Perumal (Ind) - 1,996, S. Muthan (Ind) - 1,896, Sheik Dhawood (Ind) - 4,490 and Sheik Mohideen (Ind) - 15,356. The Collector and also the Returning Officer for the Gobichettipalayam Parliamentary constituency, K. Balachandran, presented the declaration certificate to Mr. Elangovan at 12 noon.
Heavy postal ballots
As many as 2,717 postal ballots were received for the first time in the Gobichettipalayam Parliamentary constituency. The Collector counted the votes, of which, 137 were invalid. The Collector said that Mr. Elangovan and Mr. Govindarajar secured 67,942 votes and 29, 843 respectively in Anthiyur Reserved segment, 69,468 and 36,644 in Bhavani, 73,922 and 34,109 in Bhavanisagar, 65,930 and 36,067 in Gobichettipalayam, 76,820 and 43,461 in Perundurai, and 70,300 and 32,113 votes respectively in Sathyamangalam segment. Mr. Elangovan had maintained the lead from the first round of counting. The Election Observers went around all the six segments and inspected counting of votes.
